Auckland Viaduct - America's Cup Action is Heating Up
With America’s Cup action on Auckland’s Waitemata harbour set to begin in early 2021, the city’s downtown waterfront development is ahead of schedule to deliver the base areas currently being prepared for the challengers.
In August the British INEOS and the New York Yacht Clubs ‘American Magic’ syndicates take delivery of their base plots to begin building the compounds. Then in October the wharf now extended to accommodate the Italian Challenger of Record the Prada-Pirelli Luna Rossa team will be handed over to them.
We are now 18 months out to the beginning of the build-up to festivities and action of not only the America’s Cup competing yachts, but a spectacle of sailing with the giant J Boats and TP52’s prior to and during the main events that kick off in January through March 2021.
All eyes will be on the Kiwi defender which is due to be launched in Auckland in August this year and no doubt the challenger spies will be watching with interest.
The first time we will see the four of five challengers and defending racing will at the pre-Cup regatta on the island of Sardinia in April 2020.
Get ahead of the rush to secure accommodation and allow us to help you plan your visit to NZ now.
